Hi
How are you?
I am Captain Ragini from Indian army.

I want to make a career switch from my present position to the corporate world and for that i am planning to do an MBA from one of the top 25 b-schools in the US. I would really appreciate if you can provide me a realistic assessment of my chances of making it there based on inputs given below.

I completed my graduation in Science and went on to do a post graduation in Computer applications from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. On completion, I joined Network Solutions Pvt Ltd, a software firm, as a software developer and worked on a number of projects there for approx 1 year .

I then applied for and got into Officer’s Training Academy, Chennai, India, the premier Academy for training future Indian Army officers and started my training in 2004. It was really a challenge for me going through all the rigours of military training, especially being a female in a field which till recently was a male bastion. I was commissioned in the Army in 2005.

Post commissioning, I was imdtly deployed in the Ladakh sector of state of Jammu and Kashmir,India which also happens to be the highest battlefield in the world(> 20,000 ft altitude). My duties there involved provisioning, stocking and issue of approx 9000 items of assorted nature for a period of 18 months for a large number of troops through a process of Advance Winter Stocking (AWS), which is adopted in this sector since it is cut off from rest of the world due to closure of mountain passes because of excessive snowfall for 7-8 months in a year.

After completing a tenure of more than two years in Ladakh, I was posted to Central ordnance Depot (COD), the mother depot for approx 70,000 vehicle spare parts for the complete Indian Army. Here, i was involved in a pilot project named Computerised Inventory Control Project (CICP). The project aimed at increasing asset visibility across all Ordnance establishments of the Indian Army. The pilot project was successfully implemented and is is now being implemented elsewhere.

Since the Women Officers of Indian army are not given a permanent career by the Army and they can quit the job at their choice at 5, 10 or 14 years of service, I do not see for myself a long term career in the Army. Though the experience and leadership qualities which i have gained in the Army while serving in it for approx 6 years is invaluable, I now intend using my skills and experience for making a life long career. To begin all that, i intend to do an MBA from a top b-school in US. As on date i am 30 years old and i intend to appear for GMAT before end of this year for which i am already preparing.

May i request you to very candidly tell me my chances of making it to one of the top b-schools in US , the aspects i should work upon to strengthen my candidacy and the colleges and field i should work upon taking into account educational background, gender and previous professional experiences.

Thanks and regards
